3 Dog Grooming Tips Every Dog Owner Should Know

Have you ever witnessed your dog looking VERY uncomfortable? Maybe he or she is scratching or biting at his or her fur quote a bit? This could be a sign that your dog is not being regularly groomed. Think about it this way, would you allow your child to go to school with their hair unbrushed every day, probably not. In this blog, our grooming salon at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to give you a few tips on how to groom your dog properly.

Dog Grooming Tips

1. Create a dog grooming routine and stick to it.

Brush your dog regularly every day, the Pampered Pet suggests you brush your dog at least twice a day. This will allow you to help prevent matting and tangles. Regular brushing can keep your dogs fur in good condition by removing dirt, spreading natural oils throughout his or her coat. This can also help your dog's skin to be clean and irritant-free. In addition, brushing your dog on a regular basis also gives you the opportunity to check for ticks, fleas, or "flea dirt." Flea dirt is those little black specks that can show your pet is hosting a flea family.

2. Bathe your dog regularly.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends you bathe your dog at least once every three months. However, some dogs may require more frequent baths if he or she spends a lot of time outdoors or has skin problems.

3. Minimize shedding of your dog's fur.

Shedding of the old or damaged hair can be a normal process for dogs, however, the amount and frequency of fur shed can often depend on their health, breed type, and season. Dogs that are kept indoors can be prone to smaller fluctuations in coat thickness and can tend to shed fairly evenly throughout the year.

  • Brushing your dog on a regular basis can reduce the amount of fur in your home. If you are having trouble finding the RIGHT brush for your dog, please don't hesitate to ask our groomers here at the Pampered Pet. We can recommend a brush that can works best for your dog's fur type.
  • Excessive fur loss can also be traced back to allergies. If you have started feeding your dog something different and you noticed more fur had been shed, you may consider consulting with your local veterinarian.
