7 Tips to Training Your Dog
1. Have realistic expectations when training your dog.
Be patient when training your dog. If they have been allowed to do a certain behavior for years and you are now trying to change that behavior, it is going to take time. It's always best to try and train your dog as a pup, so these learned behaviors or more natural to your dog.
2. Always listen to your dog.
Your dog has his or her own way of telling you something. For example, if you are introducing your dog to another dog for the first and he or she starts barking uncomfortably, don't force your dog to meet this other dog. Your dog is trying to communicate that he or she is not comfortable for a reason and you need to listen.
3. Be generous with your affection you give your dog.
It's very easy to let your dog know when you are unhappy with him or her, but don't forget to show affection when they present good behavior too. When your dog is doing the right thing, show him or her lots of attention. How else if your dog going to learn they are doing something right?
4. You need to tell him or her what you want them to do.
Telling your dog what to do can help him or her avoid confusion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling your dog "no" sometimes. That is how they learn right from wrong.5. Don't underestimate having high-quality dog food.
If your dog is not very active and spends most of his or her days lounging around the house, then don't feed him or her the equivalent high protein food that you would a sheep herder dog or highly active dog. It's best to consult with your vet when planning your dog's diet. The money you spend on the appropriate amount of food for your dog can often save you money in the long run on your vet bills. A healthy dog diet is very important.
6. Don't be afraid to use bribery.
If rewarding your dog with a treat every time they do something well is working, then why not try it? Positive reinforcement can be key when training your dog.
7. Let your dog gradually earn freedom throughout your home.
If you have a new dog in your home, let him or her gradually earn the freedom to roam about your home freely, rather than giving them free reign all at once. This will help avoid accidents or chewing frenzies in your home.Need an experienced dog boarder at the Lake of the Ozarks to watch your dog while you're away?
