Our dog boarding at the Lake of the Ozarks is the best! Today, we are going to discuss 3 tips to avoid ticks and fleas for your pet. In Missouri, ticks and fleas are most active March through December and they have been VERY thick so far. Here are some tips that can help you prevent ticks and fleas from harming your pet.

1. Tick Collars

Tick collars can help your dog avoid ticks. Although, they mainly help with just the head and neck areas, they can repel ticks! Just be sure to read the label carefully when applying a tick collar to your dog. Make sure you can fit two fingers between the collar and neck. Also be attentive after applying. If your dog starts scratching at it quite a bit, he or she could be having an allergic reaction to the chemicals. The collar must have contact with the skin for the chemicals to spread and do their job.

2. Spot on Treatments

Spot on treatments come in a small tube of liquid. These tubes contain different volumes of pesticides depending on the weight of your pet. Some great examples you can use include, Frontline, Advantix, or Bio Spot Active Care. These can typically be purchased at your local pet store, sometimes even Wal-Mart. Applying a spot on treatment can require applying the liquid to your dogs back, starting near the neck and running it over the back till you reach the top of the tail bone. Once your treatment has been applied, typically all present ticks and fleas are killed and can fall off your pet. Usually, these treatments last for 1 month increments.

3. Check Your Dog Regularly

Be sure to check your dog for ticks and fleas regularly. Establish a routine, check your dog for ticks and fleas consistently. Maybe every night before you go to bed or even in the morning before you go to work. Work it into your normal routine. Your dog is most likely active and plays around outside a lot, so checking your pet consistently can't hurt. If you do happen to find a tick, make sure you remove it immediately and completely. All parts of the tick MUST be removed from the skin.
